Summary

Assassin’s Creed Shadows' associate game director, Simon Lemay-Comtois, has confirmed that Yasuke isn’t considered an assassin and therefore can’t use their abilities like Eagle Vision. At least he can kind of do a Leap of Faith.

As long as you don’t spend too much time on the internet, one of the most exciting things about Assassin’s Creed Shadows is its dual-protagonist set-up. On the one hand, we have the more traditional Naoe, a stealthy and fast-paced assassin with all the usual moves. On the other,we have Yasuke, a more combat-oriented samurai who struggles with movement.

Ubisoft has made it clear sinceAssassin’s Creed Shadows was first revealed that Naoe and Yasuke are going to play completely differently, but there were still some questions about which abilities would be shared and if any could be learned. It looks like Yasuke isn’t going to be getting graceful any time soon, though, as the developers have confirmed he’s not an assassin.

Yasuke Can’t Do A Proper Leap Of Faith In Assassin’s Creed Shadows

As reported by GamesRadar+, Shadows' associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois made it clear in a recent interview that Yasuke isn’t an assassin because it wouldn’t make sense with the narrative if he was. One of the big plot points of the game is that Yasuke is an outsider, which would be undercut if he just turned into an assassin.

Lemay-Comtois says that Yasuke works with Naoe, but that he isn’t an assassin and “doesn’t have to be”. This is made clearer with how Yasuke plays, as he’s much heavier, less nimble, and doesn’t have access to all of Naoe’s powers. Case in point, Eagle Vision - a staple of the assassins in pretty much every game that Yasuke won’t be able to use.

‘No. He needs to not have it so you play different with him than you play with Naoe. - Simon Lemay-Comtois

We don’t know the full extent of Yasuke’s abilities and what he might learn in the Shadows campaign, but it sounds like he’s going to remain as a samurai throughout the game. One great example of how he can’t use assassin abilities is with the Leap of Faith, which YouTuber I.Eat.Games. managed to capture on video.

If you try to do a Leap of Faith as Yasuke, he’ll technically be able to pull it off, but it’s incredibly clumsy and ends with him falling out of hay bale in pain. It’s a nice attention to detail, even if it’s surprising that the samurai can even do that without completely dying thanks to all of that heavy armour.
