Not many people could resist Balatro’s addictive qualities though, and it became popular enough tosweep the indie section at The Game Awards, as well as earn a nomination for the grand prize.
All that hype and publicity, along with word of mouth, has unsurprisingly done wonders for the game’s sales. On Twitter earlier today, the official Balatro accountannounced that the game had reached 5 million sales, an absolutely monumental milestone that not even most triple-A publishers can brag about. Over five million sales in less than a year is nothing to sniff at.

However, in true Balatro style, the developer behind the title wasn’t too keen on just sitting back on soaking in the praise. Shortly after wishing everyone an “amazing time” with Balatro, they quickly turned their attention towards the industry itself and started urging more people to check out indie games.
These comments were more aimed at people that don’t often buy indie games, which will be more than a few, given there arefive million people out there that have fallen prey to Balatro. In the tweet, they specifically ask people whose first indie was Balatro to try and “make it a habit”, claiming that “there’s some amazing stuff out there”.
For those of you already in love with Balatro, you more than likely know these comments aren’t that surprising. The man behind the title - LocalThunk - has often used his social media accounts to try and spread the joy of indie games to people who otherwise might not have bothered. He even made a thread of indie game she enjoyed last year,after he gave his prestigious “Golden Thunk award” to Animal Well.
The claim that there’s amazing stuff out there was also scientifically backed by us recently, if you were still doubting LocalThunk. 2024 was an incredible year for indies, but did you know it was mathematically the best too?More indie games reached a score of 90 or higher on Metacritic last year than any other year, so if you want to do LocalThunk and start buying more indies, there aren’t many worse ways than to pick something off that particular list.
