Summary
It’s hard to imagine theBaldur’s Gate 3companions being played by anyone else. Over the years that the game was in development and early access, the cast truly embodied the roles they were playing, going through their own journeys as their characters were fleshed out over the game’s three acts.
However, it all could have been very different. Speaking in an interview with Ginx TV,Lae’zel actor Devora Wildeshares that she auditioned for a bunch of different roles, including Karlach, Shadowheart… and possibly even Astarion.

This is because the audition process had them send in tapes for different character types, without using their names. So, Wilde believes that the types she auditioned for include these three other companions, which could have given us a very different take on the characters.

Astarion could have been a very different character
“I did audition for all the other characters too, I believe,” Wilde says. “I definitely auditioned for Shadowheart and Karlach… And probably Astarion?”
It’s all a little unclear since codenames were used at this stage. “The Tieflings were devilkin. I think you had a half-elf, a dark elf, and so I just auditioned for all of them because I have no reference, and I was just like, might as well. Let’s just go for it!”
Astarion appears to have gone through a few changes in development, as he wasoriginally supposed to be a tiefling.
She landed the role of Lae’zel “pretty quickly” after sending in her audition, and it’s easy to see why. Wilde through her all into the role, giving Lae’zel her distinct blend of militarism, regality, and at times, vulnerability.
Since landing the role, she’s gone back into the studio to record more scenes, as updates have added more content. We’ll have to wait and see if we get anything else beforeLariancompletelymoves on from Baldur’s Gate 3, andonto its next two RPGsthat it has in theearly stages of development.
