Summary

Ever since its inception in 1960, Sanrio has been creating adorable characters loved the world over. Its most famous character, Hello Kitty, is a cat, but the company has lots of other adorable cat characters under its belt as well.

Some Sanrio cat characters are simple and draw from real life, while others are more whimsical and have interesting backstories and personalities, but the one thing they have in common is that they’re all extremely cute. It’s hard to choose, but these are the absolute best cat characters Sanrio has to offer.

10Mewkledreamy

Cat Of Your Dreams

Mewkledreamy is a charming cat with purple fur, white paws, and a cute pink gingham bow that she always wears on her head. She has a line of stitching down her belly as she’s a stuffed toy, rather than a real cat, but she came to life one night when the moon shone on her.

Because of how she came to life, she seems to have some connection with dreams. If you take a nap with her, you’ll both have the same dreams, and she’ll tell you stories in your dream as well. She sounds like the ideal toy to stave off any nightmares.

Dressed To The Nines

Winkipinki’s design is in a different style to most Sanrio characters as she was made for the Fancy Friends line, and this distinct appearance is what makes her stand out. She’s a brown cat who wears a checkered dress and matching bow.

Her face is adorable too - though she has no nose or mouth, the simplicity of the design works wonderfully. In terms of her personality, she’s described as “stylish and romantic”, which definitely comes across in how she looks. She also likes painting and playing the violin, so she’s talented and creative too.

8Eddy

English Maestro

A bright blue cat with a huge smile, Eddy was created for Sanrio English Master, a series of videos to help people learn English. His official Sanrio profile describes him as “mischievous”, though he’s clumsy as well, perhaps because he’s so excitable.

Eddy’s tail also curls up almost like a squirrel’s tail. However, snakes tend to think his tail is a fellow snake and follow him around, which he isn’t a fan of. Overall, he’s just a very cute cat and has a bright personality that’s earned him a lot of fans.

7Kabukinyantaro

Lucky Cat

Kabukinyantaro is a calico cat who wears a green and white nio-dasuki on his back that ties to the bell on his front. He’s a male calico, which is a rare occurrence in real life, which may tie back to his design also looking similar to that of Japan’s lucky cat statues.

A cute detail about Kabukinyantaro’s design is the little heart symbol on his back, with one half brown and the other black, representing his calico breed. Everything about Kabukinyantaro’s design is well thought out and just adorable.

6Nyokki & Penne

Anyone Suddenly Fancy Pasta?

Nyokki and Penne, a pair of adorable cats, are owned by an Italian chef, hence their names referencing types of pasta. Nyokki is the larger black cat, and Penne is the smaller white cat. Though their fur is each a different colour, they both wear a matching blue ribbon.

Both cats dream of exploring the world beyond their home, so they leave the Italian restaurant to have their own adventure. Nyokki and Penne’s backstory and designs are both delightful, so it’s easy to see why they’re quite popular with Sanrio fans.

5Nemukko Nyago

Snork Mi Mi Mi

Nemukko Nyago (Sleepy Cat) definitely lives up to his name, as his main personality traits include enjoying naps and being laidback and carefree. Nemukko Nyago’s design is very cute too - he’s a tabby cat with brown and yellow stripes, which almost makes him look like a bumblebee.

His favourite place to be is on his soft cushion, napping alongside his cat friend Guu. Nemukko Nyago certainly has his priorities straight, and we could all take a few pages from his book and relax more often.

Kittens Galore

What’s better than one kitten? Five of them. Nya, Ni, Nyu, Nye, and Nyon are an adorable family of kittens who are just too cute. Nya, Ni, Nyu, and Nyon are white kittens, while Nye is grey and wears a bow on her head as the only girl in the family.

According to their official Sanrio profile, they’re already showing their personalities. For example, Nya is the most mature, perhaps because he’s the oldest, and Nyon is a bit of a troublemaker.

Soft Like A Marshmallow

Marshmallowmitaina fuwafuwanyanko, often shortened to just Masyumaro, is a fluffy kitten whose fur is described as being as soft as a marshmallow. He has a lot of talent according to his Sanrio profile, where it’s said he has a lovely singing voice and also enjoys playing the piano.

Alongside his musical talents, Masyumaro clearly has some secrets. He stores secret marshmallows in pouches on his belly, and the marshmallows are said to hold some sort of power. Perhaps they’re the reason why his fur is so fluffy?

2Chococat

Simple But Sweet

Chococat is one of the most popularand famous Sanrio characters, and it’s certainly justified. He’s a male black cat, and while his design is simple, it works perfectly. Sometimes less is more, and that’s exactly how it is with Chococat.

The cutest part of his design has to be his button nose that’s the colour of chocolate and what he’s named after. In terms of personality, he’s said to enjoy exploring and has lots of energy. He also loves sweets, especially chocolate.
