There is a near overwhelming amount of weapons on offer inAvowed, and it can be tough to know where to start with them. Though you aren’t locked into any specific class in Avowed, it is sensible to build your character in a specific direction to make those skill points count. Those looking to play as a Wizard will still need to find weapons, both as an alternative to draining essence and to build up your arsenal of spells.
Here, we take a look at the best weapons a Wizard can use. While it may be advisable to have your secondary loadout be something less magical, like a sword, bow, or gun, this list specifically deals with core Wizard weapons. To arm yourself to the teeth with variety, check out our list onBest Early Game Fighter WeaponsorBest Early Game Ranger Weapons.

As these are ‘early game’ weapons, we’ll be using the Dawntrail and Emerald Stair maps only.

At the basic Common stage, a wand is just a gun that shoots magic iinstead of bullets. However, it’s cheap at 150gp (not to mention readily available around the map), and is much faster than a bullet. Unlike a grimoire, it also doesn’t drain essence. However, it’s on the lower rung of what a Wizard can do, even in the early game.

Creates a cone of Flames dealing damage over time
Shoots Shock bolts to enemies, jumps to other enemies

Arcane Veil
20 second shield that makes spell casting uninterruptable and reduces damage by 50%
The easiest Wizard weapon to find is theCommon Grimoire of Elements, which is sold by Merylin in Paradis for 150gp and can be found in chests and on enemies in the Dawntrail region. Grimoires are crucial for Wizards as, along with the Grimoire Mastery skill, they are how you gain access to higher level spells. This one just as the most straightforward elemental spells inside, but if you’re planning on staying as a Wizard for the long haul, it might be best to build up an elemental specialism, as detailed in our Wizard Skills guide.

Creates a fireball AoE
Creates an ice AoE

Bounces Shock damage between three enemies
Bristling Frost
Protect yourself with frost for 10% damage reduction of Frost Accumulation for enemies
The Common Grimoire of Greater Elements is sold by Merylin for the same price of 150gp, and has bettter spells. Therefore, it’s the better deal. However, to fully benefit from it and learn its spells, you will need to upgrade Grimoire Mastery. you’re able to use this Grimoire without it, but you can’t permanently learn its spells until you unlock the skill.

The fine version of Grimoires only improve the ability cost and cooldown time, and while that is important for a Wizard to be able to constantly fire off spells, the 3,000gp cost is a hefy investment, so you should only upgrade if you’ve been getting lots of use out of the Common version.
Same story as above - 3,000gp is a big outlay for what you get, especially as the Common variant can be upgraded. But for Wizards flush with gold, you will notice the difference to how many spells you can reel off per minute.

The difference in wands is more noticeable, as you get a much higher damage output - wands are just magic guns, after all. That means, for wand users who don’t have the resources (or patience) to craft upgrades, shelling out 3,000gp here will have an instant impact.

This unique grimoire gives you access to two of the more interesting Level 1 spells a Wizard can use, moving away from the pure elemental focus of the standard grimoires. At 450gp, it’s worth shelling out for a bit more than the 300gp offerings. Corosive Siphon is especially interesting as out and out healing spells are rare (Giatta is a better fit for this role than the player character), mainly relying on your Godlike abilities. Here though, you can deal damage while healing for the best of both worlds.

In the second major city in the game, you will see a merchant selling a unique wand, and one of the best Wizard weapons you can get this early. Though it’s a little pricey at 3,780, it’s a simple way to get an unique weapon without needing to finish complex quests, find hidden chests, or defeat tough enemies. Just buy it. By the time you reach Fior mes Iverno, it should be affordable, and if you’re going to be relying on wand warefare, you’ll want Minoletta’s Conduit by your side.
3Anything Else From Porrya & Vellino
Purchase at Fior mes Iverno apothecary
To avoid the entire list being items from this one shop you can’t get until about a dozen hours in (unlike Meryln, who you can visit immediately), by the time you reach Porrya & Vellino it pays to have decided what your Wizard speciality will be. For 3,000gp, they sell Fine Grimoire of Elements and Fine Grimoire of Greater Elements, but also Fine Grimoires of Embers, Rime, Sparks, and Storms, while for 7,200 they have the Exceptional variant of these, plus the Exceptional Wand, which deals 55 Physical Damage with 52 Stun, with the standard 12 Stamina Cost and 6 percent Critical Hit chance.
Slams grimoire shut, dealing Explosive damage
Missile Salvo
Sends a sphere of enemy-seeking missiles into battle
This grimoire allows you to blast off Level 10 spells (just one, but still), while having the most well rounded array of spells out there. It can be a game changer for a Wizard looking to dominate the battlefield. Heading through Ivona’s Threshold, you will see a cut through the mountains and hear a pyromancer talking to himself. As you arrive, he will blow himself up, and with it, leave you his Grimoire. It’s not as dangerous as he made it seem - for you, anyway.
