Summary
As more and morevideo games make the jump to current-gen-only releases, includingthe recently released Monster Hunter Wildsor the upcomingAssassin’s Creed Shadows, it appears thatCall of Dutyisn’t quite ready for that commitment.
Earlier this week,it was reported that this year’s COD is aiming to release on both PS4 and Xbox One. It’s not definite,as Insider Gaming’s sources couldn’t confirm a firm release, but it is in development. That particular development has incensed Call of Duty fans, with many taking to Reddit to air out their frustrations.
The PS4 And Xbox One Are Over 10 Years Old
“Wish they’d move the **** on so we aren’t held back by 8th gen hardware,“a user commented on Reddit. While it’s impossible to say how much COD has been “held back” by being on last-gen hardware, it is worth noting that thePS3andXbox 360onlyreceived three titles post PS4/Xbox One launch.
In an interesting thought process, one userpointed to the need for Grand Theft Auto 6 to be released to help more companies move to current-gen. The idea being that, with GTA 6 being on current-gen only,it’ll force numerous players to finally upgrade their hardware, thus making a current-gen-only release of COD far more likely.
“‘Oh but the user base is still so big on the last generation,’ well maybe it wouldn’t be if they quit making games for the (dang) things,“a user wrote in a separate thread. Indeed, the user base is rather large,as COD extended its run as the United States' single best-selling game for a record 16th year. The last time that wasn’t the casewas when the Wii was around.
“Would it even fit in the hard drive at this stage?“a user cheekily wrote, pointing to COD’s notorious file sizes. Elsewhere,a user wrote, “Just keep milking the players and never provide a true-gen experience!” In short, gamers aren’t too happy about the cross-gen support that COD will seemingly still maintain in 2025. Ultimately, only time will tell if the game is able to launch on last-gen hardware, but where there is a will, there is a way.
