Summary

Early in 2024, it was revealed thatSonyhad canceled a project based on itsTwisted MetalIP. Thelive-service project, which would have been helmed by Firesprite, was largely still in the works, thoughit likely would have paired with the company’s own live-action series of the franchise.

Now, flash forward to today, andfurther details about the game, including some of its gameplay elements, have been revealed. The details paint a picture of a game that would have gone about things differently from previous titles.

Twisted Metal Would Have Been A Battle Royale

In an extensive report published by MP1st, the planned revival of the car combat series would have almost likely have been a battle royale. Internally, it was called Project Copper, and the game’s objective was pinned as “to be the last one standing.” The information comes by way of a UI programmer’s website.

Perhaps most noteworthy is that the game wouldn’t have just focused on car combat. Rather, there were plans for some third-person elements, as evidenced by the pictures included in the report. It’s unclear exactly how that would have factored in, but one image shows a player character standing on a car and dealing damage, while another image clearly shows multiple players engaged in a gunfight. Perhaps it would’ve been an either/or kind of situation.

As a final note, the game would have been running on Unreal Engine 5, which would have certainly lent itself to some pretty graphics. Ultimately, things were not meant to be, and Twisted Metal, like some other dormant Sony franchises, will have to continue to sit on the sidelines. As it stands, the last Twisted Metal game was the 2012 reboot. That said, if you’re hunkering for some Sweet Tooth, then Twisted Metal 1-2 and Twisted Metal: Black are all available online via the PlayStation Store.
