Despite it being Sandfall Interactive’s very first game,Clair Obscur: Expedition 33has gone from flying low on the 2025 release radar to being one of the most anticipated arrivals during the first half of what is a very busy year. Inspired by JRPGs, the French studio’s fledgling game follows a group of brave expeditioners on their quest to defeat the Paintress.
The Paintress returns once a year and paints a number on her monolith. That number is an omen, revealing that everyone that age will die. As the name of the game implies, the Paintress has painted the number 33 onto her monolith which means anyone aged 33 will imminently die. It’s up to Gustave, Maelle, and the rest of Clair Obscur’s core cast of characters to find and defeat the Paintress, not only saving themselves, but everyone in their world who might one day see their age painted.
