Summary

The analyst who recently claimed thatFinal Fantasy 16had only sold 3.5 million copies since launch has apologised and confirmed that statement was only an estimate.

As the excitement around the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogyandcontinued success of Final Fantasy 14 has proven, as a series Final Fantasy has never been bigger. That sadly hasn’t always translated over to sales, though.Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth notably had some pretty lacklustre sales when it launched on PS5, but things seemed worse for Final Fantasy 16.

Since it launched as a PS5 exclusive,Final Fantasy 16 has seemed like it’s been a bit of a disappointment for Square Enix in the long run, despite its great reviews. Still, we weren’t sure just how much the game had sold, which made a recent report that it had only managed 3.5 million copies since launch a bit of a surprise.

Final Fantasy 16 Has Likely Sold More Than 3.5 Million Copies

Last week,Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda shared a report based on Square Enix’s recent financial statementthat suggested that Final Fantasy 16 had only sold around 3.5 million copies since it launched. While the game wasn’t a huge success, that came as a shockconsidering its fairly recent launch on Steamand consistent price cuts.

Hideki Yasuda also claimed thatLife is Strange: Double Exposure was a “large loss” for Square Enix. This statement hasn’t been corrected, though.

Considering how quickly Final Fantasy 16 reached one million players when it launched, only getting 2.5 million copies in the following year and a half seemed a little unfeasible. Well,as pointed out by Twitter user Genki_JPN, that number wasn’t officially confirmed bySquare Enixduring the financial report.

Yasuda’s article on Square Enix’s performance has recently been updatedto remove the mention of Final Fantasy 16 and provide a new statement. That statement notes that the article claimed that Square Enix president Kiryu Takashi revealed Final Fantasy 16’s total sales, but that it was actually just an estimate based on Toyo Securities' own estimate and an “incorrect statement” from Yasuda.

The original article stated that the number of copies of Final Fantasy XVI was spoken by Square Enix HD President Kiryu Takashi at the financial results briefing, but this was based on Toyo Securities' own estimate and was an incorrect statement by the author. We apologize for the correction.

While that’s sure to be a relief to fans worried about the future of Final Fantasy, it doesn’t exactly tell us much about how Final Fantasy 16 has done since launch. We’ll have to wait for Square Enix to reveal that in the future, but for now, it looks like the numbers aren’t quite as low as reported.
