Since the gap betweenFinal Fantasy 7 RemakeandRebirthwas four years, you might assume we’ll be waiting until 2028 for the trilogy to be completed. That might not be the case though as it turns out the plot for the trilogy-ending game was written and approved in 2024 which presumably means development is moving along pretty quickly, maybe even faster than it did for Rebirth.
Remake and Rebirth’s producer Yoshinori Kitase confirmed as much during a recent interview withFamitsu(thanks,Genki_JPN). Kitase revealed Rebirth director Tetsuya Nomura handed in a complete version of the plot for the third part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy at the end of 2024. That meant the scenario for the next game could be finalized, adding that they are “very satisfied” with what Nomura has come up with for its conclusion.
This isn’t the same as weaving a plot for an entirely new game from scratch, of course. Nomura and Kitase have the base that is the original Final Fantasy 7 on which to build. However, as Rebirth proved, while the bones of the original remain, the story has gone off in some very different directions.

Kitase, who was a director on the originalFinal Fantasy 7, told Nomura that he wants part three of the Remake trilogy to respect the OG FF7 while also concluding the new series in a satisfying way, giving players the chance to experience things that weren’t possible when Final Fantasy 7 was first released in 1997. According to Kitase, Nomura has managed to achieve that.
Confirmation that the plot for part three is now complete comes almost exactly one year after the minds behind Final Fantasy 7 revealedthe first draft for the final game in the trilogy had been written. That came before Rebirth had even been released. Clearly Kitase has been hard at work tidying up that first draft and less than a year later, there are people atSquare Enixwho already know how this series is going to end.
Not only is it safe to assume the Rebirth team at Square is pushing on with part three, but the studio has made it very clear that’s the plan. While Remake received some DLC,Rebirth will not be getting the same treatmentas Square tries to get the next game out there as soon as it possibly can. If all goes to plan, perhaps the Remake story will end before the launch of the PS6.
