Summary
Many of you will be waking up this Monday morning, still struggling to accept what happened on Saturday night, hoping it was all a bad dream. It was not. John Cena has turned heel, and as acknowledged by the man himself, the most shocking part of all this might be that it came before we gotGTA 6.
In case you missed it, Cena sold his soul to The Rock at Elimination Chamber, dropping Cody Rhodes after the WWE Champion refused to align himself with The Final Boss. It will go down as one of the most shocking moments in WWE history as fans have been waiting two decades for Cena to turn heel (become a bad guy) and not many were expecting it to finally happen during what is confirmed to be his final year as a pro wrestler.

It felt as if that was all anyone was talking about on social media afterwards, and clearly Cena was gauging people’s reactions after the show. That was evident via his post on Instagram in the early hours of Sunday morning - a GTA 6 poster. There’s a running joke that something has happened before we got GTA 6 when it’s something we’ve been waiting a long time for, and now you can add a Cena heel turn to that list.
John Cena Turned Heel Before We Got GTA 6
Cena turning heel before GTA 6’s release isn’t the only video game adjacent reaction to what went down at Elimination Chamber. Fans have also been pointing out that Rhodes was effectively ambushed by threeFortniteskins. Cena is in Fortnite, The Rock is in there too as he plays The Foundation, and Travis Scott was in the ring too for some reason, the rapper’s only contribution being a punch to Rhodes' head once he was already down that looked like it came from someone who still hasn’t been told pro wrestling is staged.
While Cena’s heel turn won the race against GTA 6, it was a close run thing. 12 years on from the launch ofGTA 5,Rockstarstill appears to be adamant that its next blockbuster will be here before the end of 2025. Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive, which is also WWE 2K’s parent company, reconfirmed last month that the game will be here this year. GTA 5 is also experiencing an even bigger boom than usual, enjoying its best month on Steamrecently despite being more than a decade old.
