Sanriois known for its adorable characters, ranging from the iconicHello Kittyto unique, cut salmon-shape characters like Kirimichan. In total, just how many Sanrio characters exist? This proves to be a bit more difficult to answer than expected, as there are a lot of minor characters with only a few appearances throughout the years.
Here, we are going to discuss just how many Sanrio characters exist. This will look at character merch, as well as ranked lists from official Sanrio sites. Additionally, we’ll look at Sanrio characters that make appearances in games such asHello Kitty Island Adventure.
Sanrio Character Ranking Poll
Each year, Sanrio conducts a poll to get a sense of everyone’s favorite characters. The most recent pollranked 90 Sanrio characters, which is a lot.Below, you can check out every character included in this poll. We’ve ordered thisbased on popularity (for 2024), so you can see this as well.
Many of these names are theJapanese version.For example, in 60th place, we have Zashikibuta. This character is also known as Zashiki Pig.

So, if you scroll through this list, you’ll notice that a lot of entries are more than one character. There area lot of groups and duos.If you were to total all individual characters, it would be (at minimum)147 characters.
Of course, if you includeall the characters from Show By Rock!!, this would skyrocket above 200.This one ‘character’ would greatly increase the total, sowe are just going to work with the minimum amount of characters and count Show By Rock!! as one.At the end,we will include a grand total,but for now, Show By Rock!! is one.
Characters In Hello Kitty Island Adventure
Hello Kitty Island Adventure brings several familiar faces, but there are alsoseveral characters that didn’t appear on our poll.Below, you can check out all characters in the game.

There are a lot of new characters on this list, huh? Most of the characters in this game that aren’t on the poll are visitors. Theyvisit the island during set timeframes,but you can still fully interact with them each day. Based on this,they definitely count as Sanrio characters.
With that in mind, Hello Kitty Island Adventure brings 46 new characters to our count. In total, we now havea minimum of 193 characters.
Other Sanrio Characters
At a certain point, it’s hard to decide what really counts as a Sanrio character. For example, in the show Aggretsuko, we haveRetsuko, Haida and Fenneko, who all appear in Hello Kitty Island Adventure.This show also has16 other named characters that appear, such as a skunk named Shikabane.
There are other Sanrio shows though, The Mewkledreamy show hasseveral human characters.The big question is, do we count these? Technically,this is a character created by Sanrio.
If we were to include the humans in the Mewkledreamy show, we would have to sort through all Show By Rock!! character, which is a lot.
Character Family Members

Above, you may have noticed thatsome characters have family members,such as My Melody and Pompompurin. There are also some family members thatdon’t appear on the poll or in the game.This includesKuromi’s sister (Romina) and parents, as well as Badtz-maru’s sister (Tsunko).
In addition to Pikki and Koroppi who have previously appeared, it also seems like Keroppi hasparents named Keroma and Keroppa.What’s more, he hasgrandparents (Kerobah and Kerojee) and a girlfriend named Keroleen.
Each character has their own ‘universe’ with even more characters. There are hundreds of these characters but thankfully, you cancheck out all characters in each universe thanks to this site, which breaks down each one.
Total Amount Of Sanrio Characters
Before wrapping up, it’s important to note thatthere is no official number of characters given by Sanrio.Additionally, new characters are created regularly. Ranked low on the poll, you may even finda family that serves as mascots for a bank in Yamanashi.
Based on our article, there are at least217 that we’ve mentioned.This is the minimum and depending how you count certain poll entries, this can reach closer to 300. Just look at theShow By Rock!! character wiki! There are21 bands, with each one having several members.
When bringing in all characters from each universe,you are looking at over 450 characters.This, of course, is a lot. The total is evergrowing, asnew characters can spring up and find their place within the world.
