Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghanafrequently surprises you with what’s going on with either the plot or the boss you’re currently facing. It can be hard to remember that this is a remaster of the spiritual successor, which was more or less a remake of the third installment in the series, showing how well this has held up over the years.

So, newcomers potentially experiencing this tale for the first time will be in for a treat with the excellent music, characters, and action. Especially in high-tension moments, such as your first bout with Chester Stoddart when you reach the depths of the Illburns Ruins!

Level 13

In addition to the Small Shield, Katol Elixir, and upgraded Sword and Armor, we stronglyrecommend being at least Level 13before taking on Chester Stoddart within the Illburns Ruins. Fortunately, youshould be around there if you thoroughly explore the region, killing everything and anything in sight.

If you meet those requirements and arestill finding this encounter to be a bit too rough, you may attempt farming some more toreach Level 14 or 15or canrun the entire way back to Redmont Town and upgrade the Small Shieldwith the Raval Ore you obtained in the Illburns Ruins. Wedon’t recommend doing that, but that’s always an option!

How To Defeat Chester Stoddart, The Back-Hearted White Knight In Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana

Despite being thethird boss fightof Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana,Chester Stoddartdoesn’t have too many attacks he can toss out but uses what he has paired with hisability to deal significant damageand hisimmense speedto keep you on your toes, making it the more challenging one so far.

He has aboutfive to six attacks that can be troublesometo deal with at first, but once you have them dialed in and know when to attack, you should have him defeated in no time. It won’t be as much of a walk in the park as the previous two encounters, but if you got through them, Chester won’t be that much worse!

Chester Stoddart - Dagger Toss

A common action of Chester’s in this battle will be hisDagger Toss, having himhurl several Daggers toward Adol in a spaced-out pattern, withsome being delayed, which can be tricky to avoid depending on where you are and when he decides to implement it.

When Chestertosses out his first Dagger, create spacebetween you and him, andbegin running in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion, having theDaggers sail behind you, missing you completely. If you areclose enoughto him when he starts throwing them, you canhit him, causing him to stop. This allows you to get a few more hits in before he moves on to something else!

Chester Stoddart - Charging Lunge

HisCharging Lungeis another common move in Chester’s arsenal, but it iscrucial to get down to a scienceas it will provide you with the most damage opportunities. He willstop his movementandbegin emitting a red light around himself, accompanied by aunique soundas he charges his attack.

After he charges up,Chester willdash forward with tremendous speed and force, dealingmassive damageif he connects. At first, thiscan seem a bit impossible to avoid, but once you learn how to punish it properly, it will be your favorite move of his, as it guarantees you big damage!

Adol - Charging Lunge Counter

Topunish Chester’s Charging Lungeattack, create some spacewhen you see him begin charging up his attack and thenleap over him the moment he dashes toward you. This willcause him to missyou entirely, placing you behind him and allowing you tofollow up with several strikesbefore he does something else.

Don’t forget toutilize your Boost if you have it,activating it right as you land, allowing you to unleash tons of slashes on him in rapid succession, dealingmass damageto him. Always be on the lookout for this attack, as it will be thebest way for you to defeat him.It can be dodged consistently and is very commonly used by Chester!

Chester Stoddart - Barrier

Whilenot as common as the first two actions,it pops up enough to be a problem if you don’t know how to deal with it properly, and that’s Chester’sBarrier. When he activates it, he will place ablueish-purple Barrierin front of himself, seemingly preventing any incoming damage from Adol.

However, while itdoes negate all incoming physical attacks, itdoes not protect him from magic attacks, meaning yourIgnis Braceletwill work just fine here. So, whenever you see him toss this Barrier up,charge your Ignis Braceletandlaunch a fireball at himfor some decent damage!

Chester Stoddart - Sword Strikes

An evenless common actionof Chester’s is hisSword Strike, where herushes Adol downand attempts to land abarrage of slasheson him with his sword. If he lands this attack, he willdeal tons of damageto you, so be wary of it, even if it isn’t all that challenging to evade.

Even if it is a high-damaging attack, it isone of the most easily telegraphedones in his arsenal, ashe literally just starts sprinting at you.As soon as you see him stop what he’s doing and begin making a beeline to you in a dead sprint, run away from him, making him start slashing at nothing.

YourIgnis Braceletwill also be useful here, as you canlaunch a charged-up fireball at himas he mindlessly slashes the air for some free and decent damage!

Chester Stoddart - Dagger Dash

Dropping Chester’s health down slightly past halfwayis when things start heating up a bit, as Chester will beginviolently teleporting around the stagewhiletossing Daggers.During this portion of the fight, he willmainly only do this action, making it nearly impossible to hit him.

Unfortunately, youcannot do much at this point,as you will bewaiting for a specific attackto capitalize on, so you will just have toevade his constant dashing and barrage of Daggersby running away from him. It can get a bit tedious, especially if he doesn’t seem to be stopping, but the payoff is worth it!

Chester Stoddart - Dashing Lunge

During his violent Dagger Dash attacks,Chester will quickly try sneaking in a Charging Lunge attack, mixing it in with his teleportation techniques. This istelegraphed by him briefly charging upas he did earlier, but it issignificantly faster, making it hard to catch at times.

As soon as he is done chargingup, he willteleport and unleash the Dashing Lungeattack, whichdeals much more damagethan before and issubstantially fasterand harder to dodge. Fortunately, there is a way you cansee where he’s coming from, allowing you tocounter itcompletely.

Much like the Dagger Dash attack from earlier, where Chester just teleports nonstop, you willsee a red light emanating from where he’s about to appear. The moment this red light appears near you,run toward it and jump, sending youover his attack, allowing you tofollow up with your own.

He willessentially only do this and the previous action over and over again until defeated, which can be exhausting considering how fast this phase of the fight is and how little you will get to attack. Don’t forget touse your Boost when it’s ready.Patience is key here!
