The importance of companions is shown inAvowedever since the beginning where everyone on your ship is killed except one person, who fights alongside you in Northreach Fort. You can also have a second companion by your side here if you free Ilora from jail.
However, both of these companions will leave your side as soon as you reach Claviger’s Landing, which is also the point where the main gameplay starts. You’ll meet plenty more companions during your adventures, and here’s everything you need to know about them.

How To Unlock Every Companion
Apart from thefirst two companions that leave youin Claviger’s Landing, you encounter a total of four companions on your journey. You don’t have to do anything specific for them as they’re unlocked during the main story automatically:
Kai
Kai is the first companion that you’ll unlock in the story, and he’ll automatically be unlockedsoon after your Northreach Fort companions take their leave. As you move forward in the dock, you’ll talk to Kai and Captain Cynric.
After they tell you where you’re supposed to go next,Kai will offer to work with youand get added to your companion list.

Marius
Marius is the second companion that you unlock during the main story of Dawnshore, but you have to get killed for it. After getting assassinated in Paradis and getting revived, you’ll join forces with him to find clueson your assassin.
Marius willstay in your partyeven after getting past Paradis.
Giatta
After unlocking two companions fairly early, you’ll have to wait a while to get your third one. As you finish the main story of Dawnshore and reach Emerald Stairs, you’ll first have to talk to three people and get an Adragan Heartfor Giatta.
When you’re done with that, you can go talk to her againand she’ll be a part of your journey.

Yatzli
While you meet Yatzli at the start of Emerald Stairs already, she won’t be unlocked until you reach the Shatterscarp area. Afterreaching Thirdborn and talking to the leader there, you’ll get Yatzli in your party soon after.
How To Switch Companions
Getting a maximum of two companions during the Northreach Fort tutorial stage was essentially a teaser sinceyou can only have two companions in your party at a certain timeeven in the main game. These companions will follow you everywhere and use their abilities to aid you both during exploration and combat.
After you get your third companion, Giatta, you’ll first have to take her in the party to continue the quest. However, after her job is done, you can switch companions at any time by visiting any party camp. While exiting the camp, you’ll get the option to select the two companions you’d like.
The two companions with theirposters higher than the othersare the ones selected for the journey.
How To Upgrade Companions
After getting your first companion in Claviger’s Landing, you’llalso get a new tab on the abilities screen in the menu. This tab will be called “Companion” and features a range of abilities that you’re able to upgrade. Each companion has four main abilities, with each one having three special upgrades.
One of these abilities is already unlocked when you get the character, andyou have to further spend points to unlock and upgrade others. Companions share the same pool of EXP, which means that they all get a point at the same time. However, getting a point to upgrade them isn’t as easy as your own character.
You can see the EXPrequired for your character’s upgrade, but this isn’t the case for companions.
Since you get a lot fewer points to spend on companions, it’s important to choose your upgrades properly. Of course, you can also spend some currencyto reset each companion’s upgradesseparately.
