Summary

Sonic the Hedgehog 3was a huge success in cinemas, easily becoming the highest grossing film in the series. It was also enough to make the seriesa one billion dollar franchise, something few of us expected when the trailer for the first film dropped all of those years ago.

Now, the success is enough to make it the best performing film of Jim Carrey’s entire career. As we can see onThe Numbers, Sonic 3 has both the highest international and worldwide box office return of every film Carrey has appeared in, beating the previous winner in both categories, Bruce Almighty.

Jim Carrey’s Most Successful Film Is Sonic 3

Coming back for the sequels has certainly paid off

This washighlightedby r/boxoffice user Select-Cricket-3738, who spotted that Sonic 3’s worldwide box office takings have reached $485,718,316. This is just enough to put it above Bruce Almighty, which brought in $484,468,608.

The only category Sonic 3 isn’t winning is in the domestic box office, as that goes to How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Still, Sonic 3 is in third place there, so it certainly performed well in the US as well as overseas. It’s roughly $30 million away from the top spot domestically, so unless there’s a very successful re-run in theatres, this is where it will likely stay.

Initially, Carrey’s appearance in Sonic 3 was up in the air, as hewasn’t locked in for another sequel. Of course, not only did he return, he actually played two roles, portraying both Ivo and Gerald Robotnik.

To delve into spoiler territory, Sonic 3 ended in such a way to make it very easy to not include Robotnik in the next film, just in case Carrey doesn’t come back. However, the writers have saidthey will bring him back if Carrey is game, suggesting that he can be written back into existenceif Carrey so wishes. There isconcept art of him next to Metal Sonic, who is seemingly the next big bad in the Sonic movie universe, so there may already be a plan in place.
