Summary

With 29 large monsters at launch,Monster Hunter Wildshas fewer of the big beasts to hunt than bothWorldandRisedid initially when they released.

I probably don’t need to tell you this since it’s literally half of the series' name, butone of the main draws of Monster Hunter is its, you guessed it, monsters. The series has a bunch of iconic creatures to battle and turn into gear, with each new entry adding in a bunch of new beasts while bringing back some of the classics.

Ever since Monster Hunter Wilds was first announcedand looked to take the series in a bold new direction with more detail and a bigger world, fans have wondered just how many creatures would be available to hunt. Now the game has finally released to a humongous audience, we know for sure, and the numbers are interesting to say the least.

Wilds Has Less Large Monsters At Launch Than World And Especially Rise

At launch,Monster Hunter Wilds has a total of 29 large monsters to hunt, which includes 20 brand-new creatures and nine that are returning from previous games. Although the number of new monsters is impressive considering how much effort Capcom has put into other parts of the game, that does place it a little behind the last two entries.

For comparison,Monster Hunter World launched with around 37 large monsters depending on how lenient you are with that definition, which is nearly 10 more than Wilds. On the other hand, Rise had a whopping 46 large monsters when it launched, 17 more than the newest entry in the series.

World’s big Iceborne expansion brought that number up to 71, while Sunbreak’s additions meant that Rise ended on 78 large monsters. That does make Wilds feel a little small, but it’s just getting started.

While that might seem like cause for panic, it’s worth noting that we already know thatmore large monsters are coming in the very near future as free post-launch updates. Wilds also has much more detailed monsters in terms of both gameplay and design, so it does make sense that the number is a little less than previous games.

Still, with Wilds also being a lot easier than previous Monster Hunters, the smaller pool of big beasts to fight is going to be felt by fans until more updates come along. For now, though, we can at least enjoy how many new faces we’re smashing to bits so we can get some nice new armour sets.
