Summary

Over the weekend,Mortal Kombat 1dataminer u/InfiniteNightZ uncovered a bunch of unused Hara-Kiri animations in the files.

If you haven’t played the older games before, these are basically self-Fatalities in which the losing player kills themselves before their opponent gets the chance.

The closest we’ve come to Hara-Kiri finishers in MK1 are Quitalities.

It looks like these Hara-Kiri finishers will be implemented in a future update, given that Ghostface, who was just added to the roster last November, has their own unique animation. However, it’s worth taking all of this with a grain of salt. NetherRealm has not officially announced anything, so this entire idea could be scrapped at any moment. But with how much effort has clearly been put into these finishers, there’s some room for optimism, eh?

We Haven’t Seen Hara-Kiri Finishers Since Deception

The above montage uses modded skins.

The Hara-Kiri finisher was introduced in Mortal Kombat: Deception way back in 2004, making it the first and last game to finish this unique spin on Fatalities.

However, there have been nods to Hara-Kiri finishers in the years since. As noted bythe Fandom wiki, Scorpion attempts one in his MKX ending, but is stopped short by Raiden. Kotal Kahn also has a Brutality called “Offering” in MKX in which he cuts his own upper torso open, letting his opponent win. It’s a Hara-Kiri in everything but name.

In the montage, we see Mileena stabbing herself in the head with her two Sai, which is a nod to her Hara-Kiri in Deception.

Hara-Kiri animations have been uncovered in the past for Mortal Kombat 1, dating back over a year, and they still haven’t been added to the game. However, with guest characters as new as Ghostface having brand-new animations, it’s clear NetherRealm is still working on the idea. Hopefully, we’ll be able to perform them ourselves soon enough.
