Summary
It’s real,Magic: The Gatheringfans. As revealed by The Command Zone on Thursday, powerhouse production company Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment are coming together to create a live-action movie based on Magic: The Gathering.Previously, an attempt at a movie was scrapped in 2019.
The news is a major development for the massively popular tabletop card game. Despite its three-plus decades of existence, previous attempts at constructing a Magic: The Gathering film or television series have been unsuccessful. Thursday’s announcement will see the card game finally get its due on the silver screen.

In a statement to Nerdist, Hasbro Entertainment’s Zev Foreman said the following:
“This is an exciting and complementary partnership, uniting one of the world’s most iconic brands with a powerful and proven steward. Magic: The Gathering has inspired decades of epic world-building and creative storytelling. It is a perfect match for Legendary’s diversified approach to marquee IP, and we are excited to work together to build a whole new Magic: The Gathering universe.”
That last bit of information is also a key part of Thursday’s news. Beyond a live-action movie, the partnership will also see a television series. The series will be unrelated to the previously announced Netflix animated series, which was confirmed to still be in production in September last year.
“Alongside the fantastic Hasbro team, we look forward to creating a multimedia universe that thrills longstanding fans and creates a broad wave of new ones,” Legendary’s Chairman of Worldwide Production Mary Parent said.
Legendary Has A Legendary Track Record With IP
As movie connoisseurs may know, Legendary Entertainment is as good as it gets when it comes to translating beloved IP into multimedia projects.
Beyond the critically and commercially successful adaptations of Frank Herbert’s Dune series, Legendary was also responsible for the Detective Pikachu movie, as well as the recent Godzilla and King Kong movies. More so,Legendary has already been tapped to assist Sony with a Street Fighter movie, and arehard at work on a live-action Gundam movie, the first of its kind.
In other words, the company makes a great partner for Hasbro Entertainment, which has also revamped its own multimedia efforts. The 2024 Transformers One movie was rather well-received, as wasthe live-action Dungeons and Dragons movie from 2023. The wait may have been long, but it appears that the franchise will be in good hands moving forward.
