Nintendoconfirmed thatthe Switch 2 is real and coming in 2025on Thursday, officially showing off its next console for the first time. We’ll seemingly have to wait until April 2 for more on the games coming toSwitch 2at launch as Nintendo confirmed that’s when the new console’s first Direct will take place. Despite that long wait, it appears Nintendo will still be sticking to its tradition of holding a Direct in February each year.
The date at the end of the Switch 2 reveal had quite a few people assuming more news was coming soon. Since it wasn’t clear which date format Nintendo had used, the most logical interpretation of the date was February 4. Unfortunately, that is not the case. According to the same person who accurately leaked the date on which the Switch 2 would be officially revealed, a regular Direct is coming our way next month.
Nate The Hatenoted on his podcast (thanks,Gamespot) that, as has become tradition, there will still be a Nintendo Direct in February. Just don’t go expecting to hear anything more about the Switch 2. Somewhat surprising, and maybe even a little amusing, that even after officially revealing its next console, Nintendo might still have one more presentation that will need a disclaimer informing excited viewers that the Direct will not include anything about the Switch 2.
Nintendo Likely Has One More Direct Planned For The Switch
Nate stopped short of revealing what exactly will be shown during what might be the OG Switch’s final Direct, but there are a few games we know are coming to Nintendo’s current console.Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Editionin March,Pokemon Legends Z-Awill launch on Switch this year, as willMetroid Prime 4: Beyond. That’s ifthe pre-order cancelations at Amazonaren’t an indicator of it becoming a Switch 2 exclusive.
We’ve also still not heard anything aboutthe rumored port of Kirby: Planet Robobot. If that leak was accurate, then we can probably expect to see that game show up during a potential February Direct too. Even though it might feel as if the Switch era is coming to an end following the Switch 2’s reveal, with 150 million console owners to cater to, Nintendo won’t about the Switch immediately whether there’s a February Direct or not.
It has also been confirmed thatthe Switch 2 will have backwards compatibility. That means any of the games shown during a potential February Direct will be playable on the Switch 2. Don’t expect a better look atthe new Mario Kart game that was shown offon Thursday, though. That was almost certainly a Switch 2 exclusive that will likely launch with the console.
