Nintendoreleased its quarterly sales numbers yesterday, and to no surprise, the console and its games have sold like hotcakes.Mario Kart 8 continues to be one of the best-selling games of all time, andthe console itself is likely to sell long into the future.
While the hardware sales numbers on their own are impressive, one thing that has gone unnoticed is that theNintendo Switchhas had 72 first-party games that have sold over a million copies, 17 more than its closest competitor.
Nintendo Switch’s First-Party Library Is A Record Breaker
In the eight years since the Switch launched, Nintendo can boast a total of 72 first-party games that have sold a million or more copies on the console. Its closest rival, the Nintendo DS, managed 55 in its lifespan, and the 3DS managed 50.
Its closest competitor from hardware that isn’t Nintendo-developed is the original PlayStation, which had 49 games that were published by Sony Computer Entertainment and sold over a million copies.
The Game Boy, NES, Wii, Nintendo 64, PS2, and GameCube round out the top ten.
Microsoft and Xbox are flagging behind the competition in terms of first-party million-sellers, with the Xbox 360 the company’s best effort at 23. With Microsoft going on a spending spree over recent years, it will be interesting to see how that changes for the Xbox Series X and future consoles.
