After 14 years, a newKatamarigame might finally be in development, as Bandai Namco has just filed a trademark for “Once Upon a Katamari”.
As reported byGematsu, the last game in the series was Touch My Katamari for the PS Vita in 2011. The only ‘new’ Katamari titles since then have been remasters (or “REROLLS”) of the original PS2 games, Damacy and We Love Katamari.
If you haven’t played a Katamari game before, the premise is pretty simple. Youroll up everything in sight into a balluntil you’re big enough to gobble up the countryside.
Once Upon a Katamari doesn’t follow the remaster naming convention we saw with the last two games, so it appears to be an entirely new entry. But not much else can be gleaned fromthe trademark pageright now, so all we have to work with is the name.
Bandai Namco Also Trademarked “Gekishin Squadra”
Aside from a new Katamari, Bandai Namco also trademarked something called “Gekishin Squadra”. As Gematsu noted, this could be related to Dragon Ball Z 2: Gekishin Freeza, a Famicom game from 1991. But Gekishin isn’t a Dragon Ball-exclusive term; it simply means “severe earthquake”. So, it’s worth taking that idea with a grain of salt as it could be something else entirely.
However, it’s worth considering that Dragon Ball has been hugely successful for Bandai Namco as of late, withSparking Zero selling over five million copies last year, becoming the fastest-selling game in the franchise. A new game based on Akira Toriyama’s hit manga isn’t out of the realm of possibility. But until Bandai Namco reveals what these two games are, we can only speculate.
