Last month, Sony added a range of themes to thePlayStation 5tocelebrate the company’s 30th anniversary. These themes allowed you to start your console with the same sights and sounds you’d get if you were booting up one of the olderPlayStationconsoles.
The themes were always meant to be a limited-time thing, andSonyconfirmed that, as planned, they will all be removed tomorrow. However, in a strange twist, it confirmed it was working to bring them back “in the months ahead.”
PlayStation 5’s Anniversary Themes Will Be Back, But Sony Has No Plans For Others
These special themes represented the past 30 years of PlayStation, giving players a nostalgic hit of their favorite start-up sounds whenever they turned on their PlayStation 5. But as with all good things, at least in Sony’s eyes, it had to come to an end.
Thankfully, the company has confirmed that it is coming to the rescue from the problem that it caused, saying, “Due to the positive response on these 4 themes, we’re doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead.”
Why they don’t just stop their removal rather than undertaking some behind-the-scenes work is beyond me.
The good news was, unfortunately, followed by some not-so-good news. In a second tweet, PlayStation confirmed that “there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future” but at least it’s “excited to keep celebrating legacy PlayStation hardware with you all.”
It feels like a massive missed opportunity here from PlayStation. Custom or game-focused themes would be a slam dunk with any audience, and in a time where companies seem more willing to extract every dime from us, there’s no doubt it’d make a pretty penny. Imagine turning your PlayStation on to the nordic sounds ofGod of War, or the chirpy tunes ofAstro Bot.
