Tales of Graces f Remastered features three distinct story arcs: Childhood, Main, and Future. Combat in the Childhood arc is simplified, with no Burst Artes and only melee attacks, focusing solely on attacking, defending, and dodging. As a result, this article will focus on character strategy for the Main and Future arcs.

Midway through the game, all characters gain powerful Mystic Artes attacks. While these are strong, they do not significantly impact combat strategy and are not included in this analysis.

7Asbel Lhant

Quick And Powerful Attacks

Asbel Lhant is the eldest son of Lord Aston Lhant, ruler of the region bridging Windor’s capital city of Barona and the neighboring country of Fendel. Raised to take on the role of Lord, Asbel defies his father’s expectations by running away to enlist in Barona’s Knight Training Academy.

Asbel’s combat style reflects his disciplined training and versatility, utilizing a swordwith two distinct fighting styles:

Asbel’s combat style draws inspiration from Japan’s battoujutsu, a technique centered around quick, precise sword draws and slashes. This makes him the closest representation of a traditional Japanese swordsman in the Tales series to date.

To master Asbel, it’s essential to alternate between his A-Artes and B-Artes. Open combat with Drawn Blade Burst Style, which triggers a broad slash and activates Iron Stance, a buff that increases Asbel’s defense. Then, transition to A-Artes, to execute long combos, regenerate Chain Capacity (CC) faster, and prepare for another cycle of B-Artes.

Continue alternating between A-Artes and B-Artes to maintain battlefield control, sustain the benefits of Iron Stance, and maximize damage output.

6Cheria Barnes

The Ultimate Support Character

Cheria grew up alongside Asbel and Hubert. Once a frail and sickly child, Cheria’s mysterious recovery after the events of the Childhood Arc drove her to become a self-reliant healer. Now a core member of a relief organization, she dedicates her skills to aiding injured soldiers, earning her the nickname The Angel of the Battlefield.

Cheria excels as a ranged support character, utilizing a blend of dagger-based attacks and potent healing artes.

Pair Cheria with tanks or melee characters like Asbel and Sophie, who can draw enemy aggro, allowing her to perform uninterrupted. UseCC-boosting titlesto improve her efficiency in longer battles.

The core of Cheria’s strategy is to use her B-Artes to support the team while keeping her at a safe distance. Cheria’s ability to move almost immediately after releasing her artes provides an opportunity to reposition, dodge attacks, or prepare for her next move without losing tempo.

5Sophie

Strike And Move

Sophie is a young girl suffering from amnesia, first discovered on Lhant Hill by Asbel and Hubert during the Childhood Arc. As the story unfolds, Sophie’s mysterious origins and her connection to the greater conflict threatening the world are revealed.

Sophie is a versatile close-combat warrior capable of dealing sustained melee damage while providing focused healing.

Pair Sophie with ranged characters like Malik or Pascal to create a balanced offense-defense dynamic.

Sophie is the best crowd control character, drawing in enemy attacks and keeping them off balance. This provides windows for other melee characters to attack while keeping your long-range attackers unhindered and protected.

4Pascal

High Risk With High Return

Pascal is a brilliant yet eccentric technician with a boundless enthusiasm for discovery. Her bubbly personality and lack of conversational filter make her a comedic yet endearing member of the group. She impulsively joins the party, eager to befriend Sophie.

Pascal excels at high-damage, centralized artes that can clear mobs and heavily damage tough enemies.

Unlike most characters, chaining Pascal’s A-Artes and B-Artes can be tricky, given that her A-Artes are primarily ranged attacks while her B-Artes are close range. In most situations, you’ll want to focus on Pascal’s B-Artes, leveraging her guard to replenish her CC. Pair her with Sophie for healing and crowd control, allowing Pascal the time and space to unleash her powerful artes without fear of being overwhelmed.

If you find yourself in a ranged attack situation with Pascal, take advantage of her Bloodflamme and Fangirl Dream B-Artes. These powerful abilities allow her to target enemies anywhere on the battlefield, maintaining her effectiveness even from a safe distance.

3Malik Caesar

The Long-Range Captain

Malik is a serious, disciplined and highly respected soldier with a hidden mischievous side. He has a mysterious past that seems to haunt him, though he refuses to acknowledge it until his hand is forced. Part of his past seems to be connected to his unique fighting style, which he claims is “top secret.”

Malik is a solid long-range character and one of the most technical to play, requiring precise timing, battlefield control, and mastery of his artes.

Since Malik’s attacks leave him vulnerable, you need to be prepared to cancel a combo or immediately follow-up with another attack to eliminate openings.

While Malik has high HP, his defense is lacking. He has limited options when surrounded, so pairing him with Asbel or Sophie helps him focus on dealing damage and maintaining distance from enemies.

2Hubert Oswell

Guerrilla Warfare Tactician

Hubert, Asbel’s brother, was adopted by the Oswell family after the Childhood Arc. Originally a shy and cautious boy, Hubert’s personality underwent a dramatic transformation, becoming an arrogant, confident, and serious lieutenant in the Strahtan army.

Hubert wields a dualblade, a double-bladed sword that can separate into twin swords or transform into pistols.

Hubert is the ideal character for button-mashers. In this playstyle, you simply rush in, spam his A-Artes, retreat to recharge CC, and repeat the cycle.

Hubert excels as a DPS character. Begin his battle cycle by charging in with a rapid series of A-Artes, then retreat to recharge his CC before unleashing his powerful B-Artes. To use Hubert effectively, mastering dodging and timing his guards is crucial, as his low defense makes him vulnerable if caught off guard.

1Richard

Rapier And Magic Master

Richard is Windor’s Crown Prince and one of Asbel’s closest friends. Richard is a temporary playable character during the first half of the game, officially joining the party in the Lineage and Legacies arc.

During the Future Arc, Richard learns a move from each of the other party members.

Richard is a well-rounded character, excelling in both melee and magic artes.

The key to playing Richard is mastering the balance between his A-Artes and B-Artes. Start by using Richard’s A-Artes to close the gap and scatter enemies with quick thrusts. Then, follow up with a B-Arte combo to unleash heavy damage from a distance with reduced casting time.
