Summary
Insomniac Games' founder Ted Price has announced that he’s retiring from the company after more than three decades of delivering us games likeRatchet & Clank,Spyro the Dragon,Spider-Man, and more.
Without a doubt, one of the main things that has made PlayStation thehousehold name that it is today is its stacked lineup of first-party studios. Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Santa Monica, and more all instantly come to mind, but I’d argue that the past two generations haveespecially proven how important Marvel’s Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac Games is.
Ever since it was founded in 1994 as Xtreme Software before quickly being renamed in 1995, Insomniac has delivered non-stop hits for PlayStation, from its early days with Spyro the Dragon to its recent years with Marvel’s Spider-Man. Today, Insomniac Games announced that the studio’s founder, Ted Price, is retiring as the studio reaches its 30-year anniversary.
Price even found success outside of PlayStation with what I’d argue is one of Insomniac’s best games - Sunset Overdrive.
Ted Price Is Leaving Insomniac Games After 30 Years
Over on SIE’s official website,a blog post was shared from Ted Price that confirmed he’s retiring from both Insomniac Gamesand “from the industry” at the end of this March. Price reveals that he made the decision last year and that he felt like it was time to step aside and let others take over the team.
During the past year, I had the opportunity to work with the senior leadership team at Insomniac to create a succession plan that I know will provide the continuity, stability and strong leadership necessary to deliver more of what our fans cherish over the next several decades. - Ted Price
Speaking of which, Price also shared that Insomniac Games will soon be overseen by three co-studio heads, including Chad Dezern, Ryan Schneider and Jen Huang, who shared their thoughts on Price leaving and the future of Insomniac in a PlayStation Blog post. The three upcoming co-heads all seem excited about the future of Insomniac and what it’s going to bring to the table.
While Insomniac Games certainly seems to be in good hands as itapproaches future titles like Wolverine and the rumoured Venom spin-off, it’s certainly going to be different without Price at the helm. Here’s hoping his retirement is a good one - he’s certainly earned it after so many years of excellent work.
