Diablo 4’slatest season has expanded the sandbox with new witchcraft tools, a revamped Tree of Whispers, and a new world state that gives players a chance to slay hundreds of monsters for rewards. Wrapping your head around these systems can prove tricky if you’re returning from a long hiatus, but fortunately, there’s a great seasonal questline that guides you through the new additions.
Oaths and Debts is the first quest you’ll unlock in the seasonal quest chain, covering the basics of Witchcraft’s new mechanics and Headhunt activity. This guide will cover how to unlock this quest and give a brief walkthrough of how to complete it.

How To Start Oaths And Debts
Oaths and Debts will become available once youcomplete the main Diablo 4 campaign.Once that’s finished, make your way toGea Kulin Kehjistan and speak with Gelena. The questline will require you to complete Season of Witchcraft activities, notably the revamped Whisper system and new Headhunt patrol zones.
Each quest in the seasonal quest chain is locked behindGrim Favors and seasonal vendor reputation.you may view your reputation at the Tree of Whispers in Hawezar. Interact with the billboard next to the tree to check your progress. You’ll need to reachRank 9 Coven’s Favorto unlock the full questline.

Coven’s Favor is bound to each character, not your account.
Oaths And Debts Quest Walkthrough
Make your way to Gea Kul and talk to Gelana. She is in search of a head from the Tree of Whispers, and she believes it’s located in the city.Head to the northwest corner of town near the docksto uncover a potential hideout. Head inside.
Within the infected house is a horde of undead monsters and a massive cyst in the middle of the room. Each monster has a shield covering their HP, making them slightly tougher to kill than your average monster. Carve down the horde of monsters, then defeat the boss that emerges from the cyst.
Gelana will then take you to theTree of Whispersin Hawezar. This is where you’ll findthe Coven, this season’s vendor. Gelana has upgraded the Tree of Whispers hub with new Witchcrafting altars and a reputation board to see your seasonal progress. you may find more information on these altars in ourWitchcraft powers guideguide, but for now, keep in mind that this is where you’ll be interacting with the borrowed power mechanic for this season.
How Headhunts Work
To progress the seasonal questline, you’ll first need to increase your reputation with the Coven. This is done through Tree of Whisper bounties andHeadhunts, a new world state thatfunctions similarly to Helltide. Each hour, two zones on the map will be infested withHeadrotten, the seasonal faction.
Headhunts are a great spot to earn Grim Favors and farm for XP, featuring enemy density values that you’d normally find in Helltide or endgame content.Check the map to see which Grim Favor bounties are available in the Headhunt area. You’ll need ten Grim Favors to claim a reward.
Grim Favors can now be redeemed at crows stationed in the Headhunt region; you no longer have to return to the Tree of Whispers, although that’s still an option.
Clear The Silent Roothold
Upon completing your first set of Grim Favor bounties, Gelana will ask you to visit the Tree of Whispers once more and help quell the infestation. She’s found a dungeon in the Fractured Peaks you’ll need to clear out.Head to the Silent Roothold in Gale Valley to continue the quest.
The Silent Roothold is effectively a Nightmare Dungeon with roguelite modifiers. Before each room, you’ll be presented an array of choices that will make the dungeon harder but enhance your rewards. You can picktwomodifiers, called rituals, between sections. As with the Infernal Hordes, rituals are color coded to signify their impact and overall rarity—yellow and orange modifiers tend to be more dangerous, but they offer far stronger benefits.
You only need to enact one ritual to open the next section. For additional rewards, you’re able to activate a second one.
Your goal in each section is todestroy exposed roots on the path.Five will tend to spawn by default, although this number can vary depending on your chosen rituals. There are usuallytwo ritual sections and a boss fightin each Witchcraft dungeon. Unless otherwise stated, rituals apply for the entire dungeon, so keep this in mind when selecting modifiers.
Each dungeon ends in a short boss fight against a seasonal boss. These bosses tend to have a wide selection of AoE attacks that deal high damage, but they’re otherwise similar to Nightmare Dungeon and Pit bosses. Eliminate the boss, speak with Ouna, then return to the Tree of Whispers.
That concludes the basics of this seasonal mechanic. The questline will continue from here, requiring you to earn Grim Favor and Coven reputation to unlock additional quests. Complete Headhunts, finish any quests you receive, and be sure to claim your rewards from the Coven reputation board to acquire some much-needed upgrades while leveling.
