Summary
Considerations for this year’s Academy Awards have begun and while we don’t know which movies have been nominated for Best Picture yet, we do know which films definitely won’t be. More than 300 movies are being considered for awards at 2025’s Oscars but 116 of them have been deemed ineligible for the most coveted award, and yes, bad news Blue Blur fans,Sonic the Hedgehog 3is not being considered.
The Wraprevealed that116 of the 323 films being consideredfor Oscars this year will not be accounted for when deciding which movies could potentially be dubbed 2025’s Best Picture. Even though Sonic 3 has made it into the long list of 323, which means it can be considered for other categories, it won’t be joining the likes of Dune 2 and Longlegs when experts sit down to discuss the very best movies of the past 12 months.
As unrealistic as Sonic fans can often be - I’m allowed to say that because I’m one of them - most of the reactions to the terrible Oscars news have been amusing.BryceStorbakkenjokedthat the team behind Sonic 3 simply didn’t submit the threequel for consideration as it would have been unfair on the rest of the films gunning for Best Picture. “It would have been unfair to the rest of the movies, we all know Sonic 3 clears,” they wrote in reply to the heartbreaking news.
Sonic 3 Is Not Eligible To Win Best Picture At The Oscars
Let’s Riot
Other fans have chipped in to inform fellow Sonic sickos that other media featuring the world’s most famous hedgehog will also not be considered for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards.FrackDealsnoted that The Adventures Of Sonic the Hedgehog VHS Two Episode Special: Grounder the Genius also isn’t eligible to be crowned 2025’s Best Picture.
As for why exactly Sonic 3 and the 115 other movies deemed ineligible to win the grand prize at the Oscars next month, that still remains unclear. One theory is that Sonic 3 was released too late in the year, though since it can appear in other categories, that theory doesn’t hold much weight.
It’s also worth noting that Mufasa: The Lion King does appear to be eligible for Best Picture and it was released on the same weekend as Sonic 3. While it’s highly unlikely the latest live-action Disney movie will get a Best Picture nomination, it being eligible over Sonic 3 gives its fans some much-needed ammo. Disney has been bending over backwardsto make it seem like Mufasa is out-performing Sonic 3 at the box officewith Twitter’s community notes team having to step in every time it makes an inaccurate claim.
