Summary

Shortly after Sonic’s last game,Segasurprised us with a follow-up presumably coming in 2025. A new racing game dubbed Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. The initial reveal of the next installment in Sonic’s racing series didn’t actually reveal much at all. However, CrossWorlds got a proper outing, and a full reveal, during Wednesday’s State Of Play.

The first full trailer featured a lot more than just Shadow racing out of a garage. While the brooding hedgehog was a big part of the proceedings, he was shown racing against the likes of Tails, Knuckles, and even Jet the Hawk was tucked away at the back of the pack in the new trailer. The portals transport the racers to different worlds, and while CrossWorlds doesn’t have a release date yet, Sega ended its better look at the game by revealinga network test will take place later this month on February 21.

If you’re not excited about racing Sonic characters up the back of a dinosaur, you’re not me.

The cat was kind of let out of the bag a little early when it comes to more of CrossWorlds being shown off during tonight’s State Of Play. The first, admittedly very blurry, images of the next Sonic racing game leaked online with only hours to go until the advertised PlayStation event. Now the State Of Play has been and gone, and CrossWorlds was a part of it, it has been confirmed that the leaked images were indeed legitimate.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Gets A Full Reveal During State Of Play

Play The Network Test On February 21

This was effectively a reveal for CrossWorlds considering how little we knew about the game before now. Its official reveal came in the form of the briefest of trailers, hitting out of nowhere during 2024’s Game Awards. All that was shown was Shadow getting into a red and black car, speeding out of a garage leaving flames in his wake and tearing through a ring portal. Whatever was on the other side of that portal was kept under wraps and a simple “Coming soon” with a list of platforms closed out the 26-second reveal.

Even though Sonic’s name is right there in the title, it made sense for Shadow to be the one who revealed this game. For starters, it was revealed during the Year of Shadow. CrossWorlds' reveal also came between the release ofSonic x Shadow Generationsand Shadow’s big screen debut inSonic the Hedgehog 3. Hopefully, Shadow being showcased in CrossWorlds is evidence he won’t be largely forgotten again for another 20 years.
