Summary

A full reveal of Sonic Racing: CrossWorldsduring Wednesday’s State Of Play means we now know a lot more about the previously teased game, including some of the characters that will be on its roster. We also know that there will be connections to other non-SonicSegagames in CrossWorlds even though none of those connections were shown during its first gameplay trailer.

A deep dive into what Sonic fans can expect from CrossWorlds has beenshared on the PlayStation Blog, including details on its gadgets, vehicle customization options, and something Sega has dubbed Extreme Gear. It also explains how the Travel Rings work, revealing that the character in the lead starting with the second lap of each race can dictate which new world the Travel Ring will take racers to.

Some of you might have been disappointed to seemingly discover the CrossWorlds name is a reference to what Travel Rings will do and not a suggestion that characters from other Sega games will be on the roster. Turns out it relates to both. Right there at the beginning of the blog post is confirmation that CrossWorlds' roster will include “iconic characters from the Sonic and Sega universes”.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Will Have A 23-Character Launch Roster

With Non-Sonic Sega Characters Joining Post-Launch

Exactly who those characters will be, and which universes they will be pulled from, is being kept under wraps, for now. What we do know is there will be 23 characters at launch, the biggest launch roster in Sonic Racing history according to Sega, and ifSonic Stadium’s findingsare anything to go by, we’ll be starting things off with just about every Sonic character there has ever been.

Sonic Stadium has combed through the State Of Play trailer above and discovered all 23 characters that will be a part of the CrossWorlds roster at launch. There are some real deep cuts in there for Sonic fans with Jet, Zavok, Cream, and Storm all seemingly making the cut. Sage was also featured in the trailer, one of the newer additions to the Sonic universe having debuted as a core character inFrontiers. I believe this will be her first appearance in a Sonic game outside of that other than a cameo in The Murder Of Sonic The Hedgehog.

If I were to hazard a guess at what exactly Sega’s plans are when it comes to adding non-Sonic characters to CrossWorlds, I’d assume it will be similar to how it has worked in the newerSuper Monkey Ballgames. That when we get closer to CrossWorlds' release, DLC that adds the likes of Kiryu and Aiai to the roster will be revealed. Maybe even a character or two as a pre-order bonus once the network test is out of the way and pre-orders go live.
