Summary

During a recent interview regardingThe Last of UsSeason 2 onHBO, Neil Druckmann said not to “bet” on there being more games in the series and that the show “could be it”.

Without a doubt,The Last of Us is one of the most far-reaching and influential gaming seriesof the past few console generations. Both games were massive (if controversial) hits, while theHBO series has been received as one of the best gaming adaptations of all time. With that in mind, it seems obvious that more from the series is being considered.

For some time now, the general assumption has been thatNaughty Dogis working on two projects -its new and recently-revealed IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and The Last of Us Part 3. While that’s been a safe bet for a while now, it seems that things aren’t quite so set in stone for the series' creator.

Don’t Count So Hard On The Last Of Us Part 3

Earlier today,Variety released an interview focusing on Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us, which involved chatting to showrunner Craig Mazin and game director Neil Druckmann. While the interview is mostly centred around the new season of the show and all it entails (including some not so subtle references tothatscene), there is a tidbit in there about Part 3.

Towards the end of the interview, Variety asks Neil Druckmann about The Last of Us Part 3 and whether there’s any news to share there.Although Druckmann was never going to just announce Part 3 out of nowhere anyway, he takes the time to basically shut the idea down and keep everyone’s expectations low.

Druckmann said that he knew the question was coming at some point in the interview before noting that the only thing he really had to say on the subject is to not “bet” on there being more The Last of Us games. In his mind, the second season of the HBO show “could be it”, which doesn’t exactly scream Part 3 incoming.

I was waiting for this question. I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it. - Neil Druckmann

This is especially strange considering that Druckmann seemed topreviously hint that a third game was possible as long as the right story was figured out. It’s possible that plans have simply changed for The Last of Us Part 3, or that Druckmann is simply wanting to keep the mystique a little longer. Either way, don’t assume that another game is happening until we hear for sure.
