New “Faithful” Resident Evil Film Is In The Works
Zach Cregger, writer and director of the horror film Barbarian, is attached to the project
We don’t have much to go on right now, but the Hollywood Reporter’s sources describe it as a “revamp” that will stay true to the “initial games”, going back to the series' “horror roots”. With this in mind, it sounds like we can expect the adaptation to cover the first Resident Evil game, or at least one of the first few releases.
This would be the fourth take on a live-action Resident Evil universe. The first gave us six films, helmed by Paul W. S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich. These ran from 2002 to 2016 and focussed on the original character of Alice. The series wasrebooted in 2021 with the release of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. One year later, we got a Netflix series which followed a completely different story, but this wascancelled after just one season. Now, we’re set to get yet another take on the story of Resident Evil in live-action.
We’ll have to wait and see who gets the distribution rights to the film. Netflix might have had the last one with the TV series, but as highlighted in the report, Warner Bros. is already working with Cregger on another project and may want to keep him on board.
As for the gaming front, it’s unclear what we’re getting next. We know that Resident Evil 9 has to happen at some point, but it’s yet to be formally announced. Rumours have it thatLeon Kennedy andJill Valentine are back, who would presumably be in their forties to fifties by the time the game kicks off. It remains to be seen if they actually look like they are, of course.
