The new year has arrived, and what better way to kick it off than with a remaster of the excellentYs Memoire: The Oath in Felghana, a reimagining of the beloved Ys III, offering a more simplistic and straightforward experience compared to what you may be familiar with inYs VIII: Lacrimosa of DanaorYs X: Nordics.

Still, what’s here is a classic Ys experience that places Adol front and center, featuring fast-paced action, mystery, and that sweet exploration you expect from these titles. If you’re a fan of the other Ys titles and never played this one, or love JRPGs and are looking for a shorter experience, this is for you!

Adol Is A One Man Army

While not rare for this series, it can be a bit surprising if you’re coming from other JRPGs, as youonly play as Adolin Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana andhave no party members to utilize in combat. The good news about this, however, is that youonly have to worry about upgrading Adol and his equipment, which is sort of a relieving feeling.

So, be prepared toget used to Adol’s combat and abilities,as there is no one else you can fall back on or rely on during combat. It’s not as bad as it sounds, asAdol will gain access to tremendously strong and fun abilitiesas you progress through the game; just stick with him a bit, and you will be rewarded with an engaging and rewarding combat system!

You Cannot Manually Heal

In addition to not having party members who can help you deal damage or even provide healing or buffs, youcannot manually heal Adolin Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana.

Instead of having items you can stock up onin your inventory and use during the heat of battle to replenish your health or give yourself unique buffs or bonuses, you will insteadreceive these items randomly when defeating enemies. The catch here is that you willautomatically consume themwhen passing over them.

Thiscan make the game substantially more challenging, especially boss encounters,as youcannot heal yourself during these battles. However, this willforce you to learn their attack patterns and weaknesses, which lends itself well to this game’s combat system.

Additionally, you will also find rare items likeKatol Elixirsthat willincrease Adol’s max health, making them a godsend if you want to stay alive a bit longer in boss encounters (and, trust us, you will need them). you may also stumble acrossitems that are required to complete specific side quests, which, in turn, will usually give you more Raval Ore, so you should always explore all nooks and crannies of an area before moving on to the next part!

Side Quests Are Crucial

Side questsare a critical aspect of Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana, especially if you want to upgrade your equipment. While youwon’t receive EXPfor finishing side quests, you willusually obtain either Raval Ore or a unique itemthat will make completing them worth your time and effort.

Some of the more unique items can range fromAccessoriesthat allow you tosee in the darkto ones thatincrease the duration of your Boost modeand much more. There alsoaren’t an overwhelming amount of side questsin the game, so youshould be able to knock them allout when progressing through the game.

However, it is essential to note that youcan miss some side questsin the game, so westrongly urge you to check in on every character in Redmont Town after completing a substantial plot point, such as defeating a boss and completing a new area. Furthermore, don’t forget to check other areasbefore progressing the story, as some NPCs might need helpnear Valestein Castle and the other surrounding areas!

Revisit Areas Often

As you progress through Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana,Adol willlearn many useful abilitiesthat will not only boost his combat prowess but will alsoenable him to explore new areas. This willdrastically open up previously visited dungeonsin a massive way, allowing you toreach areas you barely couldn’t previously, allowing you to find secrets and valuable items.

Whenever youacquire a new Gauntlet or ability, youshould consider revisiting old dungeons,as you will likely be able toobtain more Gemstones or a unique item that will enable you to complete a side quest. You can also get your hands onKatol Elixirs, which will help you out tremendously by boosting Adol’s max HP!

Upgrade Your Gear When You Can

Like we mentioned earlier, you only have to worry aboutAdol’s equipmentin this game, and what’s even better news is theonly upgrade material in the game is Raval Ore,which you willget boatloads of by simply playing the game, exploring the dungeons, and completing the side quests.

There will also be a point a bit later in your adventure wheresome enemies will begin dropping Raval Ore when defeated, sodon’t worry about running out of it.You will be swimming in it by the time you roll credits.

Gold is also required to purchase most of Adol’s equipment, and you willneed more to upgrade it,but you should have plenty of that, too, if you’reconstantly exploring and defeating enemiesas you do it.Some side quests can also give you lots of Gold,so be sure to tackle them as well!

Always Farm EXP In New Areas

Speaking of defeating many enemies for Gold, youshould farm them upon reaching a new area or dungeon,as yourEXP gainsare influenced by Adol’s Level, the area he’s in, and the enemiesthat inhabit it.

For example, theTigray Quarrywillbegin giving you substantially less EXP the higher you level up,making farming the enemies therenot worth it after you reach around Level 7 or 8.From here, you will getnoticeably far less EXP,even with a high EXP Rate.

Once younotice your EXP slow down drastically, you arelikely good to proceed to the dungeon’s boss,as you are likely theproper Levelto take them on. We alsostrongly recommend purchasing new equipment or fully upgrading your current setbefore fighting each new boss!

Consumables Are Rare But Powerful

Lastly, we want to talk about theConsumablesin Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana, as they arepretty rare but are very potent itemsin the game. As we mentioned earlier, none of these items will allow Adol to heal or apply buffs, but they canoffer substantial benefits that you may overlookif you receive them and forget about them.

Although there arenot many Consumables in the game, there are enough that will help you tremendouslyduring your adventure, and we feel we must point outtheir uses and where you can obtain them!
